Baroness Cox highlights urgent Nigeria concerns to Commonwealth Secretary-General

Baroness Caroline Cox, a member of the UK House of Lords, has sent a letter to Patricia Scotland QC, Secretary-General of the Commonwealth of Nations, highlighting urgent concerns about escalating violence in Nigeria. Dr John Eibner, CSI’s international president, is a co-signatory to the letter, dated 14 September 2020.

The signatories call on the Secretary-General to raise their urgent concerns over Islamist attacks in Nigeria with the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group.

“The state’s failure to protect its citizens is a clear breach of its obligations under the Commonwealth Charter in respect of human rights,” according to the signatories, who include members of the clergy, parliamentarians and humanitarians.

They say there is now an urgent need to ensure adequate protection and aid for victims, and to end impunity by holding those responsible to account.
